Syfte och mål

By Vermicomposting the process of composting speed up and fertilizer get richer and more nutritious. Vermicompost is considered superior to conventionally produced compost in several important ways, e.g. it contains five to ten times more nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium than garden soil, and you will produce more worms. Any surplus worms can be used as pet food, fish, and sell for extra money to other composting. In this project we have investigated on how a particular type of worm can help to improve the fertilization of compost.

Resultat och förväntade effekter

The aim of this project was to develop a Swedish Vermicompost, an organic soil/fertilizer produced by worms. We have studied different methods which are recommended in the literatures. Since this is the first time which this project run in Sweden, we tried to make small scale of various methods as for pre-test phase. By choosing the best method, we build up the test chamber and ordered the worm for the real test. Our sister company, could provide us enough amount of used compost and in each step we could harvest vermicompost which have been processed in different climate conditions.

Upplägg och genomförande

We have studied different references and interviewed with experts of soil and compost. By building a chamber which can feed worms in different conditions i.e. climate conditions, we could test feeding and cultivation methods. In each step we have measured the results to find out the best way of the process. The result of each step have been tested and documented. Analysis of the result of harvested vermicompost has been done in two different ways: Laboratory tests and real farming test i.e. testing how much would it effect on taste or growing speed of different herbs or other products.
