Syfte och mål

To build a low-loss switched multi-beam antenna radar demonstrator based on microsystem technology for substrate-integrated waveguides developed at KTH, to demonstrate the commercial potential for volume production of critical parts of THz system front-ends. To investigate potential enhancements for Qamcom products using the Si technology at 220 GHz and above.

Förväntade effekter och resultat

We propose development of a switched multi-beam antenna demonstrator. The switching action is achieved using RF-MEMS switches, which have very low losses compared to other technologies at these frequencies, as demonstrated by KTH up to 750 GHz. Because the Si chip use standard waveguide flanges at the inputs/outputs COTS sub-systems (e.g. the 220/340 GHz radar transceiver module from WMMW) or a VNA) can be directly connected. This modularity reduces time to market and opens up for a multitude of novel applications by employing already developed active sub-systems.

Planerat upplägg och genomförande

The project consists of developement of waveguide components, such as RF-MEMS switch networks, antenna elements to be used as feeds for a dielectric lens or equivalent focusing system, couplers and antenna duplexers, and an investigation of the potential for integration of active devices on-chip. Initial evaluation of the switched beam antenna performance will be made using a VNA as transmitter/receiver. The antenna will then be used for a radar system demonstrator based on a homodyne transceiver module previously developed by one of the project partners (WMMW).
