Syfte och mål

The two primary goals of the MODAS project were to (1) create a method for future systems design, and (2) to apply the method to develop a driver environment that facilitates safe, efficient, and pleasurable supervision and control of a highly autonomous commercial truck. The first goal was achieved through the further development of the Goals, Models, Observability, Controllability model. Data collected from the application of the model were used to build the prototype driver environment.

Resultat och förväntade effekter

The revised GMOC model developed within MODAS can influence the design of ´future´ systems in a range of different applications domains. Similarly, the method for assessing auditory displays and the method for selecting assessment measures can also be used for any system were people and technology interact. When driving a self-driving truck with the MODAS displays, drivers rated the truck more useful, more trustworthy, requiring less workload, and supporting better awareness than a self-driving truck with no displays.

Upplägg och genomförande

The design requirements generated from the application of the design method were considered alongside the state of the art in multimodal systems design. Significant effort was invested in the application of the design method with over 150 driver consultations. The results were implemented and refined over three iterations, starting with static visual and auditory sketches, through to well integrated, dynamic simulator based scenarios. The iterations of design were refined via formal simulator experimental studies, as well as design reviews.
