Syfte och mål
The project goal was to improve the usability of the eye tracking system in simulators. A major challenge was to reduce the time needed to initialize the system. This was achieved by implementing an automatic initialization and eye center calibration, reducing times from 10 minutes or more to about 30 seconds. A tool was implemented for visualizing the gaze overlaid on the simulator video. Further improvements include the number of cameras that can be used, an illumination tolerant camera calibration, and allowing for cylindrical projection areas.
Resultat och förväntade effekter
With the improvements made, the gaze tracker was successfully demonstrated on a Cruden simulator with attendees of the Vehicle Dynamics Expo in Stuttgart in May 2011. They not only open the way for integration with various other simulators, but increase also the ease-of-use of the system in all other application areas. A fast and easy setup process is crucial for the acceptance of the system in general and opens the way for the use of our gaze tracking system in new market segments.
Upplägg och genomförande
In an early stage of the project we identified two major deficiencies of the system, the long time needed to prepare each experiment and the lack of a demonstrative visualization of the results. This was tackled with the first two work packages ´Automatic calibration of new subjects´ and ´Interfaces´. The remaining necessary modifications were combined in the work package ´Tailor eye tracking system´.
