Mission-oriented innovation - a new way of meeting societal challenges
The challenges we face in today's society are both complex and global. Whether they are about poverty, climate change or inequalities in health, individual efforts are not enough. Changes are required at the system level. If we are to achieve a sustainable future in time, we must think and cooperate in new ways. Therefore, we use a mission-oriented approach where different actors work in the same direction towards common objective.

What does a mission-oriented approach mean?
A mission-oriented approach is about changing entire systems. This requires an interdisciplinary perspective and commitment from actors at all levels. It is about breaking silos and letting actors who otherwise do not meet discuss problems and solutions. The purpose is for everyone to work in the same direction with a common objective in focus.
This characterizes a mission-oriented approach:
- Co-creation to understand and take on the challenge
- A mix of top-down and bottom-up
- Handles goal conflicts to meet complex societal challenges
- A common collection of forces with a bold objective
- Coordinated by actors with different roles in the system

Over the past year, Vinnova has worked intensively with missions. We have so far been in an exploratory phase and in dialogue with a large number of actors. Now we conduct dialogues with new actors from different parts of society in a new way of working with complex challenges, from a systems perspective. The hope is that we will succeed in covering all the different parts - to together find the best way to make a bigger difference for sustainable development.
