Metal Paste - The development of a metal additive manufacturing method

Reference number
Coordinator BRYNE AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 300 000
Project duration May 2017 - January 2018
Status Completed
Venture Innovative Startups

Purpose and goal

The study has performed the activities according to the application plan. The aim has been to design the base of a metal film machine that can produce products based on layer-by-layer manufacturing. The project has investigated different alloys that can be used as a raw material for the metal film production. The mechanical design has used known best practice to stabilize the process concerning heat and film quality. The study has verified experimentally that the design is functional to stabilize the metal film production through soldering metal films.

Expected results and effects

It has been shown that the technology works in practice and, moreover, that it is scalable. Alloy composition and temperature are important however the most crucial part is how the metal is treated prior to deposition of the metal films. Metal films were deposited with a maximal area of 400x700mm however the process would work over a much larger surface. Alternatively, deposition of the metal film could even be done in a continuous process. The potential for use within the field of additive manufacturing or in application of long goods, such as for board material, is very large.

Planned approach and implementation

Intensive project work during a limited time provides a high development pace. Capabilities for metal treatment, material analysis, design in CAD as well as of physical products, are found within the company thereby the development work become very efficient. Having a long-term view, possibilities to take fast decisions, working with high focus and with a genuine interest for innovation are all success factors for prospering innovative work. We believe in a small innovative company in many ways being more efficient in bringing unique solutions compared to a larger company.
