VINC-Virtual Integrated Compresssor Demonstrator

Reference number
Coordinator GKN AEROSPACE SWEDEN AB - Avd 9633 R&T Engineering Methods
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 000 000
Project duration October 2014 - November 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Networks with academy and and companies are needed to work efficiently wtodays and future problems. The project character where results and questions are communicated among thparties leads to challenges in sharing results and to understand problems across disciplines in a more concrete way. As an example here is that the improvement of the aerodynamic performance of a component does not translate immediately into a savings in fuel consumption. Using an engine system model and a compressor performance model, as in the project, this can be done.

Expected results and effects

Development of complex systems are mostly done by large engineering companies collaborating. VINK gives an opportunity to develop projects in different disciplines that need information from others to become effective. Examples are loads, boundary conditions and temperatures as input data enabling relevant scientific studies. As a part of VINK an open compressor geometry has been developed, where no company limitations are embedded, that can be shared freely by the academic partners.

Planned approach and implementation

A project was set up with a common goal to develop a virtual compressor for an advanced aeroengine. The project members took on different parts of this based on specializations in competence, and the share data. A broader role in proposing architecture, and support was assumed by the participating company. Working across borders this way led to challenges, but also to a resultat that could not have been achieved by any one institution. An important learning from the project is that a clear project lead and time for meetings are important success factors.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
