Important results from the project
Punch biopsy is the standard method for diagnosing suspect skin lesions. The project has evaluated improved methods for increased efficiency with respect to the actual sampling procedure and the resulting sample quality. The innovative solution needs to be realizable with respect to FTA and patentability. The method also needs to be cost effective compared to total cost of current state of the art. We have developed prototypes meeting these requirements and completed in-vitro testing as functional proof of concept.
Expected long term effects
The project has developed an innovative instrument supporting the full sampling procedure and extracting a quality sample with just a simple button push. The technical solution has been rated favorably with respect to FTO and patentability. A cost analysis show clear advantage compared to the established “gold standard” and in addition also brings environmental savings. In-vitro testing concludes that the new method effectively severs the sample by performing a perfect horizontal cut in the distal end of the instrument without visible damage to the cross-section of the sample.
Approach and implementation
Our project has generated several concepts for functional prototypes. These concepts were evaluated with respect to realization, FTO, patentability and total cost. Two concepts were selected for further development into functional prototypes. Prototype A (12 versions) and Prototype B (1 version). In-vitro testing was performed by experienced dermatologists. The project achieved its key goals with Prototype B as the main candidate for further development.
