Venture The strategic innovation programme Electronic Components and Systems:

Purpose and goal

The goal of the SEEN (Smart Eye-tracking Enabled Networking) project was to define, implement and evaluate novel service provision using smart eye-tracking sensors to optimize data-intensive products in 5G networks. Based on this mission we have developed a world-class solution by integrating an eye-tracking into a virtual reality headset, as well as implemented and verified a novel streaming service that can save more the 90% bandwidth over a low latency 5G network.

Expected results and effects

The project started by building a testbed to conduct user-tests on how to use gaze-data to perform efficient data, networking and computing resources optimization. In parallel, an integration of eye-tracking into a VR headset based was carried out. The SEEN testbed was later on integrated into a real 5G system, leading to a permanent 5G VR demonstration at Ericsson Studio in Kista. A number of events have demonstrated SEEN worldwide to IT and telecom industries, eg MWC, SIGGRAPH, and IEEE 5G Summit. The success of the project has generated several new businesses for all partners.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has from start been well scoped and delivered milestones on time. A steering group had five meetings. A number of thesis were carried out with supervision from both academic and industry. , ensured to fulfill both the overall objectives and support the daily work. Industry commitment and allocation of experts beyond the scope of the budget has been notable and instrumental. Also, attracting top students by appealing industry packages is another source of success. In addition, the multitude of events and demos created a close loop between the partners that is still at work.
