Reliable cryogenic microwave amplifiers

Reference number
Coordinator CHALMERS TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLA AKTIEBOLAG - Microtechnology and Nanoscience
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 000 000
Project duration September 2016 - August 2019
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme Electronic Components and Systems:

Purpose and goal

To develop unique reliable cryogenic low-noise microwave amplifiers in order to make Swedish electronics industry competitive in the global Big Science market. New amplifiers has been demonstrated and commercialised within the project. The Swedish SME partner LNF has by independent actors strengthened its role on the international Big Science market.

Expected results and effects

-To solve critical process steps in the semiconductor process. We have demonstrated a new stabilized cryogenic transistor process now in use by LNF. - Reliable fabrication of 1000´s of integrated amplifiers on wafer. This result is partly achieved. This is due to other problems than addressed by the project. - Increased competitiveness for a Swedish company within Big Science. LNF actively participates in procurement for Big Science in SKA and ESO.

Planned approach and implementation

- Manufacturing and test of transistors, first at Chalmers on-wafer and then at LNF in hybrid amplifiers. This has been done several times and worked well. - Testing of the promising concepts in an integrated circuit process and then implementation in a full circuit process. Have been done according to plan. -Mounting of circuits in modules and final testing. Have been executed and published. An optimization study is currently in process and the results will be published 2020.
