Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project is how to produce spirally welded pipes in high strength steel 1.8976 and stainless steel 1.4404. The literature study of the standards/PED demands, practical welding tests and automation shows that it’s feasible. With known conditions, the goal is to proceed with field tests of laser welding equipment, and if positive result start a full-scale project. Alvenius wants to offer both a stronger, more environmental friendly and less energy consuming alternative in form of laser welded pipes and also enter new markets with stainless steel spirally welded pipes.

Expected results and effects

The literature study by Mälardalens Högskola and practical tests have shown that a change of method to laser welding in high strength steel, such as 1.8976, and stainless steel 1.4404 producing spirally welded pipes according to the demands in the PED and governing standards fully possible. The result will help us in upcoming investments where the goal is a full-scale project with laser installation in an existing production line. With this method and choice of material, we aim to offer the market both a more efficient new product and a more cost effective and environmental friendly such.

Planned approach and implementation

From the literature study point, 4 different rounds of welding tests has been done by Permanova Lasersystem AB, with different set-ups of process parameters and joint preparations. The test pieces have been examined according to standards and analyzed against the demands. The challenge has been to meet the demands for the ductility/elongation at break after the welding, due to an embrittlement in the heat affected zone. PED has demands for the elongation to avoid that brittle breaks occurs, due to safety. By every test result an optimization has been done with respect to the elongation.
