Optical measurement system for determining the temperature and the meniscus level in continuous casting

Reference number
Coordinator PROXIMION AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 879 000
Project duration April 2014 - November 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Proximion has developed a temperature measurement system for molds in continuous casting. By using advanced fiber optics temperatures have been measured but also the meniscus level and the shape of the steel melt have been evaluated. These parameters have been analyzed and the results have been connected to control parameters in the steel production. The system also detects cracks and stickers allowing the system to be used as an alarm system. With an advanced monitoring and automation system there is a great potential to increase both yield and quality.

Results and expected effects

The fiber optic measuring systems of Proximion have measured the temperature in the mold at more than 2,500 discrete points as compared to conventional methods which measure 10-20 points. High resolution temperature profiles with resolution of 5 mm have been generated. Temperature profiles with such a resolution have to our knowledge never been published. The meniscus level as a function of settings of the electromagnetic brakes has been analyzed. The system has been run in production and the mold has been taken in and out of operation many times, showing the reliability of the system.

Approach and implementation

The project has brought together Proximion´s knowledge of fiber optic temperature measurements with the requirements of temperature measurements in the steel industry. A cooperation consortium has been created with representatives from the steel industry, mold supplier and research institutes in metallurgy and fiber optics. Since the participants have come from all parts from research to end customers all the relevant details have been highlighted and analyzed. The consortium has achieved the expected results and the work will continue after the Vinnova-funded project.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
