Purpose and goal
The project aimed at improving the integration of medically educated immigrants into Swedish society as well as increase the quality of interpretation services within Swedish healthcare.
Expected results and effects
The project "Medical Interpreters" have proven that newly arrived immigrants with a medical degree deliver higher quality interpretation than their existing Swedish counterparts. This has proven true regardless if the interpretation has been done using Swedish or English as base language
Planned approach and implementation
4 newly arrived trained doctors (2 male,2 female) from Arabic countries were given the chance to work as medical interpreters at Helsingborgs lasarett as they work towards their Swedish doctors lic. Based in the emerg. room but also interpreted at other dep. such as childbirth. They got to contribute with their knowledge which gave a huge added value according to hosp. staff. The interpreters eg played an important function within society and developed their Swedish. Very successful project!
