Project duration October 2014 - August 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project´s aim was to increase awareness of open data and free licenses amongst academia, industry and the GLAM sector, through improved instructional materials and events targeted to different audiences. Our estimate is that the aim has been achieved as all goals have been reached by far. We have met a lot of people that are in control of valuable data that have expressed interests in Wikidata and we have established new partnerships which will enable further dissemination of knowledge.

Results and expected effects

A comprehensive set of material has been created regarding open data and free licenses. 10 events were held and a total of 479 participants received information. At least 36 different org. discussed with us. On top of that, a workshop on how they can share data was held with 6 Swedish authorities, hosted by SMHI. This work will bear fruit in the coming years when the various org.´s internal work have further progressed. Already, several new projects are being developed from these meetings.

Approach and implementation

Creating printed materials and promotional products at the initial stage were important as they were in demand at the events. Several participants brought with material to colleagues - increasing reach. Wikidata feels new and exciting and we were able to participate in program activities in several major events, and reached a wider audience than expected and geographical spread. The collaborations resulted in lower costs, better selection of material and interesting seminars at the event.
