Purpose and goal

The project has taken a major step towards the implementation of efficient autonomous transport systems in cities. This by finding effective ways to both plan, operate and follow up the results from autonomous transportation. The result consists of both simulations and working prototypes of autonomous buses. The development of smart coordination systems for bus fleets has paved the way for an efficient implementation of autonomous public transport solutions for buses that have positive effects in terms of cost, environment and safety.

Expected results and effects

The project has contributed to learnings in several different areas linked to automated public transport solutions. From methods to optimize the effect of autonomous bus lines in urban planning to external HMI for an autonomous bus with a focus on safety. In addition, standardized integrations between management systems and autonomous vehicles have been developed and tested on the road. Concepts of systems for monitoring autonomous vehicles have also been developed together with software to effectively coordinate autonomous buses in bus depots.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been carried out in different ways for the different parts of the project. KTH has developed the algorithms and simulations for urban planning as part of a doctoral project. The same applies to the development of the algorithms for the coordination of buses in bus depots, this done by a doctoral student at Örebro University. External HMI work has been made by a Scania-team within ergonomics and design. The integration between management systems and vehicles has been developed in collaboration between Scania and INIT, while control room development has been done at Scania.
