Important results from the project
The overall objective was to conduct a feasibility study for the implementation of a waste management scheme for biogas production and to conduct the research necessary to build a pilot / demonstration plant in Brazil which have been met and a consortium has been formed with three universities, nine companies and two municipalities in the both countries. Triplex Helix concept has been practiced and a graduate student from the Environmental Science and Engineering Group at Linnaeus University has studied and analyzed the working process. Experimental tests have been conducted.
Expected long term effects
A pre-sorting technology for biogas production, storage, monitoring and an early warning system for spontaneous combustion has been developed and implementation proposed. The need for equipment for the construction of an industrial full scale / demonstration plant for biogas production have been identified. Export opportunities for products from Flexus Balasystem, Wastec and Minmancer and biogas and sorting facility from Purac. Increased safety in the transportation, sorting, separation and storage of solid waste has discussed and baling system tested in laboratory scale.
Approach and implementation
The present case scenario considered MSW reaching the transfer station of Caju, Rio, operated by Comlurb. Caju was selected as the most interesting site and material for biogas production. Recently, we found that municipality of Rio planning to install a Brazilian biogas technology pilot plant in Caju, type Methanum Resíduo e Energia. Differently from Purac technology (wet process),the Methanum is a dry process, and preferred by Comlurb. Methanum is constructed with unit capacity 20 tons/day that is much less than the Swedish. The superiority of Swedish technology needs to be proved.
