Project duration September 2013 - February 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim of this project takes point of departure in how Swedish housing companies owned by municipalities initiate organisational innovations. Questions revolve around what organisational preconditions are needed and the relations between the innovations, business principles and usefulness to society. Seminars made an important point clear for future research. The new legislation in Sweden from 2011 has created an inherent tension between demands for business principles and to take on the social responsiblity the companies historically have been associated with.

Results and expected effects

The expected results from the project were divided in practical utility and potential scientific contributions. Practical results were restricted to the outcome of the seminars, which made discussions on the future for public housing in Sweden possible. In scientific terms the work has created material for future applications for research funding and scientific texts for international research conferences. The foundations now made for future research in the field implicates possibilities for new connections with both private and public housing companies.

Approach and implementation

The plan presented in the original application for implementation was followed, all the way until two weeks before submission of the second application. At that time one of the companies left the project. Four seminars, with managemenat and real estate management staff were organised, with a background material provided by the research team. Discussions brought together different competencies and professions involved with management of housing properties, and focused on innovative forms of organising in the day-to-day management of the housing stock and its tenants.
