InnoMine II - innovative mine waste recovery

Reference number
Coordinator KOPPARBERGS PIGMENT AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 582 000
Project duration July 2013 - January 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

(1) Test of a dry pigment process with mine waste as raw material A process has been tested and pigment has been produced in technical scale; the factory premises have been further equipped (2) Test of pigment properties and quality improvement Pigment has been analyzed; effects of composition and grain size on quality and color have been studied (3) Analysis of environmental consequences Analysis is in progress of the effect of removal of Fe(III) from a site on the choice of remediation strategy

Results and expected effects

(1) A dry pigment process using historic mine waste as raw material is introduces and full-scale production is planned for the next phase of the project (2) Some new potential pigment raw materials will be tested in the continuation of the project (3) The effects of removal of a component that can support continued weathering of sulfides from a historic mine site can be quantified and demonstrated, of importance for the choice of remediation strategy

Approach and implementation

(1) Preparation of mine waste for analysis and pigment production collection and sieving in the field; grinding, sieving and burning in test facility (2) Laboratory analyses chemical characterization (element, phase and grain size analysis), weathering potential (oxidation by Fe(III), analysis of durability and color (3) Theoretical analyses the importance of various parameters for quality; evaluation of new potential pigment raw materials, environmental consequence analysis, market analysis
