High-efficiency carburizing process with new gas

Purpose and goal

After interesting results obtained after the first test performed using a new gas in gas carburising, this project aimed at evaluating the full potential of this new gas aiming at increasing the efficiency of gas carburising with better carbon transfer.

Expected results and effects

Three heat-treatments were performed. One with propane as carbon enriching gas (reference) and two with the new gas and different CO-contents. All the heat-treatments were controlled in the same way by the furnace´s control panel. The results from the characterisation of the steel pieces show no clear benefit of the new gas. hardness profiles, internal oxidation, HTTP are the same in the different gas mixes.

Planned approach and implementation

The tests were performed in an industrial furnace with control of the atmosphere in the furnace. The best possible conditions for a successful test, which was confirmed by Aga´s measurements of the atmosphere in the furnace.
