Purpose and goal

The goal of this project has been to develop an industrially relevant lubricant based on graphene oxide (GO). Two systems were selected: GO-modified lubrication greases and self-lubricating silver (Ag)-GO composites for sliding electrical contacts. Highly beneficial multifunctional properties were obtained for the Ag-GO composite system. Excellent tribological properties (low friction and wear) could here be combined with electrical properties very similar to pure Ag. The benefits were demonstrated in a transformer tap-changer under close-to-real conditions.

Expected results and effects

For GO-modified greases, we have not succeeded to achieve improved performance. For Ag-GO composites, an unusually low wear rate and dry friction coefficient, <0.1 vs. a ag counter surface, could be achieved. this can be compared to ca. 0.2-0.3 for a greased ag ag contact. good go dispersion is a key parameter. results have generated a lot of interest and a patent application has been submitted. further development activities in collaboration with the local business unit and uppsala university is continuing. focus will be on identifying cost-efficient, scalable production methods.>

Planned approach and implementation

Most activities have been carried out according to the project plan. Demonstrator tests took longer to prepare than expected, but were finally carried out with assistance of the local business unit. Cost calculations have also been difficult to make, owing to the fact that the different large-scale process steps have not yet been fully defined. But overall, the project has been successful. The composition of the project team has been key and each group has contributed with their own specific expertise, to positive project results and innovations..
