Purpose and goal

The purpose of this project was to improve the efficiency of shared mobility in terms of waiting time, costs and emissions, by developing a new fleet management system that optimizes the match between vehicles and rider bookings. A comparison with an existing solution showed that the new system on average reduces the driving up distance with more than one kilometer per trip, which in turn lowers the resulting cost and emissions. In the same manner, the waiting times are on average lowered with more than two minutes per trip. Hence, the project´s goal fulfillment is concluded to be high.

Expected results and effects

The new system on average reduces the distance and time for driving by more than one kilometer and two minutes, respectively, per trip. This can decrease the cost for each trip with up to 20 SEK, depending on vehicle model, which can improve the drivers´ margin but also lower the cost for end-users. In the same way, the average taxi can save about half a ton of CO2 emissions per year through these improvements. The reduced waiting time improves convenience, but also safety in travelling, as many trips with long waiting times are avoided according to the results shown in attached diagrams.

Planned approach and implementation

CEVT developed a new fleet management system based on maps and other geolocation features from HERE Technologies The new system was compared with an existing solution on the market, through a pilot with over 6000 trips from Taxi Göteborg. For each matching of vehicle and trip that the systems handled, the resulting driving up distance and time were estimated with digital routing tools. The estimations were saved and then compared to analyze the systems´ different effects on travelling costs, waiting time and environmental impact.
