Development of the next generation of antennas

Reference number
Coordinator GAPWAVES AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 415 000
Project duration December 2015 - November 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim was to develop an antenna for mobile telecommunication with significantly increased performance and a compact form factor compared to existing antennas. The objective was to deliver a first version of the antenna that can be produced with a commercially viable mass production method that meets customer requirements. Gapwaves has successfully manufactured antenna layers with high quality by plastic injection molding combined with metallization. The antenna meets the requirements in terms of functionality and prices and the manufacturing process is commercially viable.

Expected results and effects

Gapwaves has focused on the manufacturing method of plastic injection molding in combination with metallization. Discussions have been held continuously with several potential customers to understand the market requirements. The product and the manufacturing process have been optimized accordingly. Gapwaves has filed three patent applications to take advantage of the new knowledge that has been generated in the project. This has been done in collaboration with patent agencies. Gapwaves has a stronger market position today and was listed on Nasdaq First North in November 2016.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been performed in three work packets: 1) Technical development 2) Assessment of customer requirements and 3) Development of intellectual property. The project has been executed by Gapwaves own personnel and consultants. Gapwaves has recruited two key employees with extensive experience within microwave technology. Gapwaves has collaborated with patent agencies to expand its patent protection based on the new knowledge that has been developed during the project.
