Important results from the project
The project objective was to develop cloud based services for control of manufacturing variation (errors). The services developed support two innovative solutions namely: smart workholding system and error compensation through NC code modification. The services include prediction models, scanned geometry analysis and anomaly detection. the prediction models are for variations from upstream processes, fixtures, machine tools, and springback effects from the residual stresses considered.
Expected long term effects
The project developed services for two innovative solutions for control of manufacturing variations namely smart workholding system and error compensation through NC code modification. A demo fixture with embedded sensors and a controller built which communicates with prediction tools in the cloud to set new positions. Modification of the NC code is to compensate for the distortions due to the residual stresses. The results from this project were published in one journal and one conference article.
Approach and implementation
The project idea includes new and state of the art concepts that need to be proved through analysis and demonstration work. The NC-compensation for the residual stresses is rather new idea. The analysis and the demo construction work is performed around industrial cases and with close support with industrial expertise. Esentially there were two parallel development works carried out the NC-code modification and the smart and adaptive fixture design and demo fabrication. After the specification of the ideas and concepts, the scope of the analysis and development work were defined.
