Project duration December 2016 - September 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project aim was to conduct a pre-study for the project Klimathjälpen / Climate Aid. The purpose of Climate Aid is to create a unique test bed where greenhouse gas emissions are visualized to aid people in Uppsala make climate smart choices in their lives. The project assessed technical (ICT) possibilities to collect, calculate and visualize a person’s climate footprint in e.g. a mobile app. The project planned for an information campaign about climate with the visualization as a base.

Expected results and effects

The outcome of the pre-study is a report where possibilities, difficulties, and a road map forward are detailed. The pre-study shows that it is not yet possible to capture a person’s whole climate footprint only using specific consumer transaction data. A campaign based on the pre-study is estimated to get 10 000 people in Uppsala to reduce their respective climate footprint by 1 tonne CO2e per year, by 2020. Some will partners intend to implement a campaign. As a side-effect, a couple of partners have developed further methods to calculate and visualize climate impact of food.

Planned approach and implementation

A pre-study with three parts: 1) What organisation to form to support the cooperation between the partners, with both profit and non-profit organisations. 2) How to form a campaign, taking advantage of the different partners’ possibilities (workshops). 3) How to collect and visualize climate impact from a person’s everyday life to that person. The technical project leaders met with relevant partners. Collectable data were identified combined with ways to collect them and convert them into tonne CO2e. There was also an investigation on collection of data from non-project-partners.
