Purpose and goal

One of the biggest obstacles to obtain Social Sustainability, particularly wellbeing and health, is stress. By reducing stress we can create better conditions to seize human resources. Based on Sahlgrenska Academy research, we have developed a method for relaxation. A specific Music pattern, supported by Nature Sounds and Voice, guides the respiration and supports an optimal Heart Rate Variability. The App MusicforMoods is developed to make the method available to anyone with a Smartphone anywhere. The app measures Heart rate and Heart rate variability, no extra equipment needed.

Results and expected effects

The app concept is upscalable without extra production costs. This creates big data quantities and governs for significant evaluation of the method. We aim to show an effect on stress and stress related diseases. To obtain secure results, longer term studies are needed. It is worth mentioning that we have already received positive indications among the first users of the app. A woman suffering from IBS syndrome noticed remarkable relief after using the app for a couple of weeks. This will be followed by more research to evaluate the effects.

Approach and implementation

Building and sustaining a strong team with several competences requires a lot of time and resources. A stimulating challenge is the interdisciplinary nature of the project. A great asset was the contact network established before the start. There is a great interest in the project but not all of those who want to participate turn out to be a resource for the project. And some members need to leave the project out of personal reasons. Besides the main outcome of the project new connections are tied between divergent faculties and branches.
