Important results from the project

This project aims to - in a holistic perspective develop raw materials of birch in an effective and more sustainable way than today. By this, a competitive edge should be developed. This presumes that the new green products is developed by the use of the birch materials in an optimised way. - develop processes for the raw materials of birch into new valuable polymers and chemicals with methods adopted for the involved industry. - include new functions to paper with value for the packaging market. One area in focus for the new products is packaging.

Expected long term effects

The project shall take advantage of the birch raw materials to strengthen the competitiveness of the swedish forest industry. Renewable packaging materials will be developed to replace fossil plastics by the use of materials from the pulp and paper processes. The new material will add new functions such as barrier to paper. Processes for production of renewable materials such as glues and polymeradditives are developed.

Approach and implementation

Competences such as process technology, material design and barrier technology are required to perform in various sub-projects. There is an established cooperation between these areas at Innventia as well as by the industrial partners Billerud and Korsnäs. The project team consists of several levels in the packaging value-chain. A process will be developed, within the project, for production of polymers and chemicals.
