Purpose and goal

This project has resulted in an initial pre-study study of the shear spinning process. The manufacturing method is of interest to GKN Aerospace for double curved geometries. Modeling and simulation together with a shear spinning tests have increased the knowledge about process possibilities and challenges. Further, information on existing demands within aerospace industry have bene shared with Fredriksons AB. The cooperation and completed studies have been successful and generated new ideas for a larger application of research project between GKN, Fredriksons and RISE IVF.

Expected results and effects

During the project, experimental forming studies of the shear spinning process have been carried out. These initial studies have been successful and have thus increased the understanding of the process´s challenges and opportunities. The results of the project will form the basis for formulating a major research application. Fredriksons AB has also become more aware of the requirements picture of the aircraft engine industry and therefore has a better understanding and decision data which will form the basis for a possible certification and approval within aerospace industry.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been performed in a few work packages: 1: Transfer of existing demands in the aerospace industry. 2: Identification of material properties to generate input data for modeling 3: Planning of shear spinning test, process parameters and practical issues 4: Initial FE-analyses of shear spinning. 5: Shear spinning tests at SME. 6: Formulation of a research application. All parts have been carried out led to the project objectives have been met.
