Advanced Aluminium Alloys in structural lightweight components [Triple A]

Reference number
Coordinator Swerea SWECAST AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 000 000
Project duration December 2014 - November 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the Project was to increase use of aluminium in structural Components with extreme demands and thereby decrease weight. Demonstrators used as targets are one Component for Aircraft Engines, one for Heavy trucks and one Component for chainsaws. The goals for the Project have been to achieve a weight loss of 20 % in demonstrator, to increase TRL from 3 to 4 and 5 respectively, to characterize properties at elevated temperatures and fatigue for at least two Alloys, to produce educational material for industry course and for master course and to produce a plan for implemenation.

Expected results and effects

The aims for this Project have been fulfilled to a great extent. The effects on longer terms are that the results have generated activities for implmentation in several branches

Planned approach and implementation

The project is strongly established in several branches. The researchers have been Swerea SWECAST, the research institute for foundry industry, and Jönköping University, an acknowledged partner in materials research. The foundries have conducted casting trials and contributed with process knowledge. The companies have the specifications of requirement and have handled the demonstrators. The project has been divided into two work packages with at least one jointly meeting each year to ensure that results will be spread throughout the industry and to give the partners extra value.
