Important results from the project
During the period 2017-12-15 2022-06-30, almost 300 projects have received VFT funds, 65 patent applications have been made and 117 company formations have been completed. The activities can be found in Life Science, Tech as well as in other activities that are representative of broad-based universities. In general, many of the companies that emerged from VFT-financed projects become portfolio companies at LU Holding, are mentioned on Ny Teknik´s 33 list, IVA´s equivalent or receive other similar attention.
Expected long term effects
The VFT program’s approach, to “create more, and even better, exchange of the knowledge-based projects” has been broad. The outcome in terms of measurable results such as the number of projects with VFT funds, patent applications and company formations that came out of VFT-financed projects, as mentioned above, can be considered good. It is a good sign that many of the companies become portfolio companies at LU Holding, and as a result of this processing work, contribute to increased tax revenue and job opportunities, are mentioned on Ny Teknik´s 33 list, IVA’s equivalent, etc.
Approach and implementation
Applications are examined in a decision-making group with innovation developers, head of department for LU Innovation and CEO of LU Holding. LU Innovation has an innovation process with phases that focuses on societal benefit and commercialization. Each phase is matched against an adapted version of KTH´s process with Innovation Readiness Levels. LU uses a CRM system to create an overview, e.g. over phase shifts and to provide an opportunity to extract key data. Overall, the process works well and at the end of 2023, a collegial preparation phase was introduced.
