Purpose and goal

The purpose of this project has been to develop a cost effective production system for full scale production based on ANS Triboconditioning®. The “One-Station-Machining” concept combining machining and treatment process in one machining step has been evaluated during the project. The process has proven to be able to deliver parts within geometrical tolerances and reduce friction and wear in engine rig tests. The goal of the project to have a ready and implementable process for production has been reached with the successful production trail conducted in the factory at Bosch Rexroth.

Expected results and effects

Results from verification tests carried out on pistons and cylinder bores produced with the "One-Station-Machining" concept has shown 30% less fiction in boundary lubrication regime compared to the reference and wear on pistons is reduced. The running-in process of an engine with treated components is also shortened, which means that the engine is more efficient directly from the factory. The machining processes in the One-Station-Machining concept has also shown to be able to meet both geometric and surface requirements specified on the drawings for pistons and cylinder bores.

Planned approach and implementation

The work in this project has been done in a close cooperation with Bosch Rexroth and the tool supplier Diahon. Treatment trials were first done in Germany at Diahon were different tool designs were evaluated. Production process development has mainly been done at ANS with support from Bosch Rexroth and Diahon and production trials with “One-Station-Machining” has also been done at ANS. Successful production trials on pistons was finally done in the factory at Bosch Rexroth. Verification tests of the effect of the Triboconditioning® process has been done in test rig at Bosch Rexroth.
