Transportable nanocellulose demonstration factory

Reference number
Coordinator INNVENTIA AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 600 000
Project duration July 2014 - December 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Nanocellulose as strength additive in paper and board has been studied for a long time, indicating great opportunities. However, the need for a local large-scale production creates innovation challenges that are difficult to overcome for most companies. The aim of the project was to design, build and start up a transportable demonstration plant, a goal that now has been reached. The plant will facilitate the evaluation of nanocellulose in different products and processes by giving companies the opportunity to produce nanocellulose locally to perform full scale trials.

Expected results and effects

In the short term, this project has significantly improved the possibilities for assessment and implementation of the technology to produce nanocellulose. By using the transportable demonstration plant, paper and board mills can on-site test the concept of nanocellulose for their unique purposes. In the long term, the plant will enable a broad implementation of nanocellulose in, for example, the manufacturing of paper and board in order to improve product properties or resource efficiency. The demonstration plant will also enable evaluation of critical process equipment.

Planned approach and implementation

Implementation of the project has worked well. Close cooperation between, Innventia as project manager and commissioner of the transportable factory and BillerudKorsnäs as the first user have been decisive. The project has been delivered according to plans from start to finish with only minor adjustments. The project parties are very pleased with the outcome of the project and the transportable plant is ready to be introduced to the market.
