Funding from Vinnova SEK 276 163
Project duration August 2012 - December 2015
Status Completed
Venture Traffic safety and automated vehicles -FFI
End-of-project report 2012-00046eng.pdf (pdf, 387 kB)

Purpose and goal

An improved design on the brake hardware opens up for new possibilities to further improve the design of active safety systems (adaptive cruise control, queue support etc.) and brake strategies. With an optimised design, a more effective brake system will be the result. One benefit could be shorter stopping distance. See project (RNo 2009-00086) for more details. This project was cancelled prematurely up on request on the conducting party (JTH).

Results and expected effects

The result from this project were two publications, one article and one conference contribution. See project (RNo 2009-00086) for more details. This project was cancelled prematurely up on request on the conducting party (JTH).

Approach and implementation

Due to the project complexity the project will be divided into four phases. In Phase One the global analysis model of the disc brake system will be set up e.g. modelling, boundary conditions etc. In Phase Two detailed knowledge concerning frictional heating, thermal stresses, disc cracks and fatigue life and wear will be built. In Phase Three the main focus will be on optimisation of the most important parameters e.g. fatigue life. In Phase Four a simulation model of the Volvo brake test rig will be created and correlated. Additionally simplified complete vehicle simulations will be done.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
