Purpose and goal
The Story Machine is a digital toolbox for creating interactive games for schools, where students create digital media such as blogs, podcasts, movies and photos for action ahead and unlock new missions and challenges. The Story Machine can easily lift learning outside the classroom and encourage participation, involvement and media production.
Expected results and effects
The Story Machine has been experienced by over 1000 participants in five different cities. We have produced a digital framework for transmedial educational games that can easily be used by educators to create experience based learning. Within the project, over 20,000 units of digital media has been produced by students who participated in the games. The game narrative has lifted learning beyond the formal classroom context and created great motivation through storytelling.
Planned approach and implementation
With a broad knowledge base in the project team where game designers, programmers, researchers and educators have been able to focus on their skills while at the same time having the opportunity to listen to each other, the collaboration in the project has worked very well. By setting up games in different areas and with participants who have different prerequisites, and with extensive field studies of the students´ experiences and actions, we have been able to collect data that have been directly iterated into the next game.
