The societal burden of airborne aerosol particle emissions from shipping in the Baltic

Reference number
Coordinator Lunds universitet - Fysiska Institutionen
Funding from Vinnova SEK 42 674
Project duration December 2015 - September 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

A measurement standard is developed for the measurements of emission factors of particles, that can be used for governmental insitutes to estimate the health effects of shipping traffic. The measurements should also be used to find tracers for shipping, which can be used to estimate the contributon from shipping to pollution. Finally, the Lighthouse competence centre is planned to include a more extensive research about particles. The project is supposed to end up with a new project idea for these issues.

Expected results and effects

An increased cooperation between Lund university and Milano Institute of Technology is developing and with the shipping industry. New projects are also planned between Lund and Milano. For example, a project was granted from Crafoord foundation for a postdoctor position.

Planned approach and implementation

Several trips were executed to attract different companies to existing ship measurements in Falsterbo. This included commercial visits to the field station, video clips of the station and activities, and a presentation towards different companies what Lund and Milano are working with. This has resulted in a close relationship between the researchers and several companies, and plans for future colleborations. For example in the EU Hercules-C project for shipping emissions.
