Purpose and goal

The public libraries in Sweden have long been an important mediator of literature and knowledge, but in the digital world, libraries are left in the wake. Gains in terms of efficiency would follow if all municipalities could co-finance the development and management of a common digital library platform. This project aimed to establish initial financing and a joint organisation for that purpose. This has been done, and there is now a development plan for a joint organisation and a digital library platform. The first service will have children as a target-group.

Results and expected effects

Short term: A common vision, a development plan and a model for a joint organisation and co-financing, backed up by a sufficient number of initial partners to be able to continue the development after this project. Long term: High digital availability to literature and to other library resources all over the country.

Approach and implementation

The project used a series of different methods to gather and to discuss the information needed. Interviews with library users in order to understand the basic needs concerning information on a national and local level. Workshops with libraries aiming towards a common vision and common goals for the digital libraries. Internal meetings in order to create a development plan and a schedule for future deliveries of digital services. Research and meetings with the purpose of establishing initial financing and a joint organisation for all libraries in Sweden.
