Test Site Orust, Tidal energy

Reference number
Coordinator Falkung Miljö Energi AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 250 000
Project duration July 2013 - December 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

This report provides an early sign of the potential for a test site for full-scale testing of tidal stream power generators offshore Orust. Time and cost for the establishment of a test site are estimated in a proposed feasibility study. Objective for this conceptual study is to investigate whether a test site is possible to establish in the waters around Orust, which is positively endorsed by the report. In addition, sea currents should be measured to detail the potential of different locations around the Orust island, and the business potential to be evaluated in detail.

Results and expected effects

This conceptual study indicates a potential of establishing a test site for tidal stream power generators offshore Orust. Sea currents have to be measured and studied in detail to verify the potential. A test site for harvesting sea-based energy is a potential new business for Sweden to enter and stay up-front an evolving technology. In the short-term perspective, a feasibility study should be undertaken to design the test site in detail and thereby support the concept in the business and obtain the necessary permits of the Swedish authorities.

Approach and implementation

A conceptual analysis has been undertaken of long-term needs and global trends, local potentials, conflicts of interest, ventures and physical pre-requisites for a test site of tidal stream power generators offshore Orust. The project has been coordinated by the project manager by investigating and meeting representatives of the Orust County and consulting authorities, universities and companies related to marine technology on the Swedish west-coast. The opportunity, realization and appropriate location of a test site have been considered from a broad benefit perspective.
