Purpose and goal

The project has led to a final decision to establish and start a new international institute for research and safety assessment on drugs and chemicals effects on humans and the environment - the Swedish Toxicology Sciences Institute (SweTox), which will start between dec -13/jan -14 and then develop furhter on. SweTox will contribute to a chemical-safe society by being an international institution where academia, industrial research and commercial activities interact.

Results and expected effects

The result of the project is a well in line with the project plan. A consortium agreement and workplan will be made between the involved universities for the Swedish Toxicology Sciences Institute (SweTox). Karolinska Institute will host the academic center within SweTox and Acturum the business unit. SweTox will i the long run give Sweden a stronger international position and competetiveness especially within the area of new toxicology and safety assessment for better health and environment.

Approach and implementation

The project shows that early public seed capital can create high values for the society. Good coodination, broad and sustained support among universities, research councils, government agencies and businesses will secure long-term operation and financing. The process have consistently performed well. Karolinska Institute will host of the academic center and Acturum the business unit, which will start later than the academic center.
