Swedish lignin-based carbon fibre

Reference number
Coordinator INNVENTIA AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 000 000
Project duration December 2013 - December 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

A test bed to facilitate the development of lignin-based carbon fibers has been established. All work packages in the project plan has been completed. Companies along the values chain have discussed product development and product segments. They have performed own analyses on how lignin-based carbon fibres could be used in their products. A unique equipment where filaments can be stabilized and carbonized during tension has been built. Process lay-out and technical specifications for a continuous pilot multifilament carbon fibre line based has been developed.

Results and expected effects

The industrial usage of carbon fibre is foreseen to increase dramatically. Carbon fibre composites will replace steel in cars and transport vehicles and reduce weight and thereby the fuel consumption. Lignin is a bio based renewable material that is accessible in large quantities and that can be raw material in the carbon fibre production. The present test bed facilitates the development of lignin as a precursor in the carbon fibre production and that Sweden can establish a domestic production. The test bed should be a hub and an accelerator to speed up the development.

Approach and implementation

The project consisted of three work packages and the structure and the project performance showed that the project lay-out worked well. 1.Project management, workshops, product development, business models 2. Avaliability of the infra structure, development of unique equipment and marketing of the testbed. 3.Technical specifications and decision support for investment in a continuous pilot line for lignin based carbon fibre.
