Purpose and goal
The purpose of the project was to increase the safety of the mining industry’s operations based on lessons, experiences, and principles from successful national and international examples, thus improving the attractiveness and image of the industry. The objective was to develop strategies and proactive indicators to improve safety practices in the mining industry, contributing to making the industry a safe and attractive employer. Both the purpose and specific objectives have been researched through a study focusing on six companies.
Expected results and effects
Through an analysis of policy documents as well as statistics from six companies in the Swedish mining and mineral industry, and interviews with work environment experts from these companies, STRIM SAFE has created a picture of which areas of safety work are prioritized in the industry and what characterize these. In the project, two models have also been developed, one with a focus on quality assessment of measures taken within the framework of safety work, and one with a focus on safety indicators that can measure the performance of safety work.
Planned approach and implementation
To fulfill the purpose and achieve the objective of the project, we developed five work packages with a focus on: 1) project coordination, 2) mapping of the companies´ safety work via document studies, 3) field studies focusing on interviews, 4) analysis of the material collected from work packages 2 and 3, and 5) dissemination of the obtained results. Despite some adjustments during the year 2020/21 as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, we were able to carry out the data collection to a sufficiently large extent and in total the project resulted in three written reports.
