Project duration October 2013 - October 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project has studied physical products with embedded systems, where the trend is connectivity with the possibility of changes after production. This is central to the industry´s digitization and the Internet of Things (IoT). The project has studied how to develop an ecosystem for open innovation around products, and four main issues have been addressed: business models; product architectures; processes, methods and tools; and quality assurance. Similarities and differences with the ecosystem of pure IT services have been investigated.

Expected results and effects

The project has contributed to knowledge in relation to the four research questions, and thus laid a foundation for industry´s strategic work on opening up their products in an ecosystem. Seven corporate partners participated, and for several, the project has had a direct impact. For example, Springworks´ development of Telia Sense was directly affected by their participation. The results have been evaluated experimentally, and the platform MOPED has been published as open source and is now used by several organizations. The project has resulted in 12 scientific publications.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been a collaboration between two research partners and seven industrial partners. The work has been carried out iteratively and was organized in six technical work packages, which in turn has initiated twelve different studies. In these industries have participated in different degrees. Some of the results have been evaluated empirically through experimental platforms, which were also used in some open workshops with external participants. The project results were presented publicly on numerous occasions, targeting both industry and academia.
