Pre study on the use of dual energy x-ray for rot and fungal detection in the wood industry

Reference number
Coordinator INNOVATIV VISION AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 461 750
Project duration December 2013 - May 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project has found that the company´s normal X-ray system does not have sufficient resolution to safely identify minor rotting in normal industrial production. However, this project shows that a modified system has the potential to detect even weaker rotting under industrial conditions.

Results and expected effects

The project has provided a basis for future development projects with the aim of developing an industrial product for the detection of rot and fungus in the wood-processing.

Approach and implementation

The project has been implemented as a combination of theoretical analysis and practical tests. The project was carried out by internal resources along with resources from partner Mantex in Kista and customer Innowood in Gamleby. Internally, the hypotheses have been tested in a WoodEye 5 X-Ray with the normal specification for dual energy X-ray. The same tests have been conducted in Innowood in Gamleby having a WoodEye 5 X-Ray in industrial operation. Tests with dual energy X-ray with greater difference between the energy levels have been tested in the lab environment at Mantex in Kista.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
