Purpose and goal

The Plant Protein Factory (PPF) stage 2 aims to verify the business potential by establishing a pilot plant for the extraction of high-value proteins and other nutrients from unused green mass. The vision is to become a raw material supplier of highly processed plant proteins and other plant nutrients to the food, cosmetics, nutraceutical and animal feed industry. The main goal of the project is a verification and dimensioning of a full-scale factory close to a biogas production facility.

Expected results and effects

The Plant Protein Factory´s business idea does not compete with existing arable land as only unused green mass is processed. The project has opened up the possibility of new, locally produced food, cosmetics, nutraceuticals and feed products. The extraction process has been scaled up and the market potential of the raw materials has been evaluated. The analyzes show new sources of income for farmers and new business models for the biogas industry. There is a market potential for several raw materials. Parts of the process need to be further developed before large-scale production.

Planned approach and implementation

The Plant Protein Factory has scaled up and installed the process, extracted and then evaluated 12 different green biomasses that are currently underused. They can be divided into sorting and crop residues from food production, catch and intermediate crops and ley. The raw materials from the extraction consist of plant nutrients as well as green and functional proteins. Market participants have evaluated the raw materials. In parallel, the biogas potential for the residual streams has been verified. The potential and interest in moving forward with the results is great.
