Purpose and goal

The Plant Protein Factory UDI Step 2 (PPF) aims to verify its business potential by establishing a pilot plant for the extraction of high-value proteins, nutrients and phytochemicals from unused green biomass. The vision is to become a raw material supplier of highly processed plant proteins, nutrients and phytochemicals to the food, cosmetics, health and food supplement and animal feed industries. The main objective of the project is an Investment Memorandum to establish a UDI Step 3 full scale plant in connection with biogas production.

Expected results and effects

PPF´s business idea does not compete with existing cropland as we process only unused green biomass. The project opens up the opportunity for new, locally produced, natural and nonallergenic food, cosmetics, dietary and animal feed products to reach the market. We will develop extraction processes and evaluate the market potential of the new raw materials from plants. PPF will also create new revenue sources for farmers and new business models for the biogas industry while creating brand new and sustainable plant based raw materials.

Planned approach and implementation

The PPF will evaluate 18 crop residuals through the pilot plant. Examples include cauliflower, broccoli, lupin, clover, red beet, carrot and sugar beet leaves. The raw materials extracted are protein isolates, functional proteins, lipids, starches, fibers, plant juices, plant organelles and phytochemicals. These will then be evaluated by 10 market participants towards developing new innovative products. In parallel, biogas verification will be conducted to study how the biogas potential is affected by processing the substrate and applied to the overall business model.
