Purpose and goal

The aim of the project was to investigate whether innovation procurement could be used to develop a mercury-free method for COD analysis for wastewater, which was fulfilled since the project will be taken forward and an innovation procurement will likely be initiated in 2014.

Results and expected effects

The project resulted in a brief survey of previous studies regarding mercury-free alternatives to the COD analysis, and options available today and its limitations. Through a questionnaire and several interviews, we also collected information about the current use of CODCr analyzes in Sweden and overview of how the situation looks in some European countries. The sector´s needs regarding mercury-free alternatives to the COD analysis has been compiled were we also took a probable future change in the law, into account.

Approach and implementation

In the project, information was gathered on the use of CODCr analyzes in Sweden through a questionnaire and interviews. Through the questionnaire (response rate 63%), we obtained a good overview of the current situation while the interviews provided a deeper understanding of the process in some of the larger organisations. An overview of previous studies on alternatives to mercury-free COD analysis was made in the project, and contacts was taken with several countries in Europe to look into any possible mercury ban in their countiries and if so - their solution regarding COD analysis.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
