PhD-paper - Processes for Highly Deformable Paper

Reference number
Coordinator INNVENTIA AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 750 000
Project duration December 2014 - September 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

A test bed for production processes of highly deformable papers has been established. By increasing the extensibility of paper materials, normally limited in deformation ability, new application areas are made possible. For this purpose, two highly modular and novel technologies patented by an Italian SME Gruppo X di X gruppo, were integrated at the pilot environment and paper machine at Innventia.

Expected results and effects

Paper materials were manufactured with a number of different properties such as: two-directional strain at break of 20%, 40% strainability, tailored properties of low or high grammages, a factor 6 increase in tensile energy absorption, e.g. Such properties may widen the design window of forest based materials as well as create opportunities for new application areas and markets for a continued healthy forest industry.

Planned approach and implementation

Methods, practices and strategies for how to operate the pilot manufacturing line and how to characterize and tailor the resulting material has been developed throughout the project. Within the project, 11 pilot trials was performed and aimed at: testing and improving the test bed, manufacturing of demonstration materials, investigate questions relating to industrial implementation as well as new application areas for paper materials.
