New Separation Tool for Omics Exploration

Reference number
Coordinator Umeå Biotech Incubator AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 990 000
Project duration December 2014 - December 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project aimed to verify the technology, market, and business idea of innovative high performance HILIC (hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography) separation columns as a new tool for chromatographic analysis of small hydrophilic molecules within the "Omics" research areas, i.e., proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and glycomics. The developed products should solve complex separation problems that are important in pharmaceutical development, clinical diagnostics, and biomarker discovery.

Expected results and effects

A series of HILIC columns have been developed using our innovative surface modification technologies. These columns have long lifetime, high reproducibility, and tailor-made selectivity that are crucial to "Omics" studies. They increase productivity and reliability in the analysis of water-soluble molecules in complex samples. The new products are branded as iHILIC®-Fusion, iHILIC®-Fusion(+), and iHILIC®-Fusion(P). They have been commercialized on the global market through direct sales and an international distribution network in more than 20 countries.

Planned approach and implementation

We evaluated the user needs and market demand by interviews and meetings with competent users, experts, and existing distributors. The technology of material synthesis and column preparation were verified in close collaboration with experts in different Omics areas. It allowed us to get direct and quick feedback along with the technology development. High-quality application notes have been developed and provided as guidance for other users. We have also verified business models, market analysis and go-to-market strategy, IPR, and financial development for the startup company.
