Metrological application of graphene

Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - SP Mätteknik, Borås
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 250 000
Project duration July 2015 - December 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim of this project was to develop metrological applications with graphene through a close collaboration between metrological experts at Riksmätplatsen (National Metrology Institute) and world leading graphene scientists at Chalmers. A joint PhD student was employed to work in the project. The project was very successful, the results are already being used at Riksmätplatsen and have been noted internationally. The collaboration between Riksmätplatsen and Chalmers has strengthened thanks to the joint PhD student and joint project applications.

Expected results and effects

New techniques for reliable contacts to graphene and for controlling the carrier density have been developed and tested through realisation of quantum Hall resistance. Thanks to the collaboration with Chalmers in this project, RISE is probably the first metrology institute in the world to use graphene for the primary national realisation of electrical resistance. The collaboration continues with further planned joint projects. Riksmätplatsen and Chalmers have become attractive collaboration partners in international metrology related graphene projects.

Planned approach and implementation

A joint PhD student was employed for this project, jointly funded by Riksmätplatsen (through this VINNOVA project) and by Chalmers. This arrangement has worked very well and has strengthened the collaboration between Riksmätplatsen and Chalmers, and both parties have learned a lot from each other. The results have been presented at both physics conferences and metrology conferences, which has resulted in an efficient dissemination of results. The potential for further joint research projects in the future is excellent.
