Project duration December 2011 - December 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The overall aim of the proposed project is to strengthen the mathematical biology activities in Sweden and to build a lasting collaboration with the research in the area at the University of Surrey. Scientifically, the project consisted of three themes: The cell cycle, Toxicology and Neuro Science. I have got insights into all three areas and contributed to the research by writing research articles. During the project I became a Visiting Senior Lecturer at University of Surrey, which means that I will be able to make longer and shorter research visits to the department also in the future.

Expected results and effects

The specific goals includes to strengthen and improve Swedish mathematical modelling in biology, especially in the areas of diseases and medicines and to share best practice on industrial involvement in research and supervision of students. These goals have been fulfilled through my research on mathematical models for the cell cycle and in neuroscience in collaboration with University of Surrey and Stockholm Brain institute, respectively. I have successfully supervised a master student with Stockholm Brain Institute, and the next step will be to take on a joint PhD student.

Planned approach and implementation

The project consisted of developing and analysing mathematical models for tumour growth, models for splines with application to toxicology, and models for neuroscience. This has been carried through together with researchers at the University of Surrey and at KTH/Stockholm Brain Institute. One and a half years of the project time was spent at the University of Surrey. The toxicology project has also involved collaboration with companies such as Syngenta and Pfizer. One research article is submitted and two will be completed during this year.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
