Purpose and goal

The project´s main aim has been to identify research needs regarding innovations for a longer worklife and lay the foundations for a longer research program. This objective has been fulfilled. Listed below are some examples of the areas we have identified are in need for more knowledge: How do health effects of working longer or retiring vary depending on individual factors as well contextual factors such as work conditions? What jobs and careers that will be in demand in the future? How can occupational knowledge as well as educational achievements be validated systematically?

Results and expected effects

The project has resulted in a) the identification of research needs; b) a platform for further collaboration; and c) the identification of three areas for improvement: 1. The physical and psychosocial work environment 2. Skills development and skills transfer 3. An inclusive and more flexible working life Thanks to the project knowledge about these issues has been disseminated within the group and further on within the group members´ organizations. Another important effect of the project is that it has been the vehicle for setting up the upcoming research program.

Approach and implementation

To be able to identify which factors that hinders older people from working longer SNS gathered a group constituted by representatives from different industries, unions, government agencies and research. The project focused on three half-day meetings where the work was based on the group members´ experiences and relevant research. Ilinca Benson, research director at SNS and Caroline Schmölzer, project manager at SNS, have been responsible for coordinating the process. The working method was appropriate for this project.
