Implementation of method developed for improved maritime statistics with Big Data

Reference number
Coordinator Trafikanalys - Trafikanalys - Stockholm
Funding from Vinnova SEK 250 000
Project duration December 2017 - June 2018
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Transport Analysis will implement an already developed method to use AIS data (a kind of geographical Big Data) in the production of maritime traffic statistics. Transport Analysis is able to supply ship arrival statistics in order to re-duce the work currently done by the harbours. We are also able to supply new statistical infor-mation regarding transportation volumes and routes by geographical areas and by types of ships.

Expected results and effects

The method and required supporting tools have been developed using AIS data in order to improve our statistics regarding maritime transportation. This has enabled us to develop a distance matrix which will be used to improve the quality of information produced by Transport Analysis. We will also enable us to develop new, useful information. The method will reduce the amount of work currently required from the respondents since we can supply them with AIS data regarding ship arrivals by type of ship. The system has been installed at Transport Analysis in a full production environment.

Planned approach and implementation

Four basic development areas have been installed. API 1: Analysis and understanding of the process and a continued development of the technical solutions required for operations. API 2: Run the model with all accessories and the same input data as in earlier development in a full operational test to ensure that all requirements are met. API 3: Use the model in a full-scale production of statistics based on new input data and refined procedures. API 4: Improve the quality of information available to users and ensure that these users are fully informed about this development.
