Purpose and goal

The main purpose of the project was to create a guide for those who are about to start their own makerspace. We also wanted to make an idea database with suggestions that can serve as inspiration for new projects. Furthermore, we wanted to establish a community in order to get more information from different maker initiatives.

Expected results and effects

Among other things, we have created a startup and maintenance guide for makerspaces. We have documented how you can use different types of machines and what to think about when buying them. We have started a collection of ´recipes´ with ideas and plans for different projects. We have begun the work with starting a community. The latter part has met with some difficulties, since only a few have been interested. However, we have a small number with whom we are collaborating and it is our hope that this group will grow larger over time.

Planned approach and implementation

We have arranged a number of maker events. We have documented the startup of our own makerspace and issues that arose during maintanence and meetups. We have engaged our students in the project and they documented the different machines we have in our workshops. They have also created some descriptions and plans for projects and have come up with tips on how to use the machines. Engaging students in the project was a good idea. They have been able to focus on one, or a couple, of machines and have really been able to delve deeply in to the machines capabilites. The have been an inexpensive resource.
